Parade marks 40 years of Liskeard Royal Naval Association

THE Liskeard branch of the Royal Naval Association marked its 40th anniversary on Sunday with a parade through the town and a service of remembrance at the Castle Street war memorial.

The event began at the Cattle Market, where veterans, standard bearers, civic dignitaries and representatives from local organisations assembled before marching through the town centre.

At the war memorial, a service was conducted by the branch chaplain, the Venerable Ian Wheatley CB, RN. Wreaths were laid during the service before the Last Post and Reveille were played, followed by a minute’s silence.

The parade – which was led by St Pinnock Brass Band – then returned through the town, with participants taking part in a formal salute outside Webbs House.

The reviewing officer was Rear Admiral John Weale CB OBE RN, a former Royal Navy officer who served as Flag Officer Scotland and Northern Ireland and Rear Admiral Submarines.

He was joined for the salute by the Mayor of Liskeard, Cllr David Braithwaite, and Marie Belfitt, chair of the Liskeard RNA branch.

The parade – which saw local residents line the streets from start to finish – formed part of celebrations marking four decades since the Liskeard branch was established. It also highlighted the close relationship between the association and the town, which was formally recognised in 2024 when the branch was granted the Freedom of the Town.

The honour was presented following the Liskeard Remembrance Parade, when then mayor Christina Whitty recognised the branch’s long-standing contribution to the community.

The anniversary parade also provided an opportunity to remember members of the armed forces who have lost their lives and recognise the continuing contribution of Royal Navy veterans and serving personnel.

The Liskeard branch has maintained a visible presence at civic and remembrance events in the town and continues to play an active role in the local community.
