CHOIRS and groups will descend on Truro next month to sing in one voice for world peace.

The ‘One Day, One Choir’ event is being organised in Cornwall by Paul Haines. The international project will see choirs from around the globe unite to mark the United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21.

An event staged in Truro last year was so successful, says Paul, that this year there will be two days of singing in the city, September 16 and September 21.

Speakers from groups such as the Cornwall Faith Forum and Amnesty International will also take part.

Paul, who walked from Rome to Jerusalem in 2015 to support the charity ‘Children of Peace’, has been travelling the UK visiting cathedrals in various cities. As a result, 30 places of worship have pledged to take part in this year’s World Peace Day singing project.

Paul particularly wants young people to share their beliefs and perspectives on peace at next month’s events.

‘When I walked from Rome to Jerusalem, I met many refugees and came face to face with people who had suffered terrible things,’ he said.

‘It is this that drives me forward, and from that stemmed me wanting to do what I can for peace.

‘At that time, and during my travels in the UK, I have also met people who are working hard for peace, and doing things that the world ought to know about. This is what leads me to hold optimism within me.’
