Fans of Cornish historical drama Poldark – and its stars Aidan Turner as Ross and Eleanor Tomlinson as Demelza – have only a little over a week to wait for the start of series three on Sunday, June 11.
The new series, filmed over last autumn and winter, is a nine-parter based on Winston Graham’s fifth and sixth Poldark novels, The Black Moon and The Four Swans, again adapted by Debbie Horsfield and coming somewhere between series one’s eight episodes and series two’s 10.
Series three sees Ross trying to rebuild his marriage with Demelza following his controversial and passionate encounter with first love Elizabeth (played by Icelandic actress Heida Reid), who is now the wife of his wicked rival George Warleggan (Jack Farthing).
The series begins with the customary scenes of a rider galloping over the Cornish cliffs - but this time it is Elizabeth on the horse with suggestions that she is trying to bring on a miscarriage.
The action is set during 1794, when the period of the French Revolution called the Terror was at its height, and we see Ross leading an expedition to France to rescue his doctor friend Dwight Ennis (Luke Norris), who is being held prisoner in a former convent.
There are still six Poldark novels left to dramatise and filming for series four is due to start in September.
It is not yet clear whether series three will have a preview screening in Cornwall like the previous two.
