A local musician is planning a kayak challenge to raise money for Parkinson’s UK.
Drew Hallam was diagnosed with Parkinson’s last year and since then has been on a mission to raise as much money as possible to help find a cure for the condition.
He raised £3,500 at a music evening at the Brittania Inn in Par earlier this month and now the dad of two is planning a three-day kayak from Golant near Fowey to Feock in July playing live music at every stop.
Drew said: ‘I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at 35-years-old, it was a shock and I subsequently struggled with the diagnoses and my mental health. I had to take time off work and accept all the help being offered to me through work, friends, the NHS and my family.
‘I’m now in a better place and the doctors are getting closer to getting my medication correct. I enjoy being outdoors, so why not do a kayak challenge, I intend to kayak at least 28 miles and get my friends Chris and Rich to join me.
‘It’s important to raise awareness and funding for research to find a cure for this incurable degenerative brain disease. I know times are hard, so if you can’t donate, please find some time to visit the Parkinson’s UK website to educate yourself about PD, awareness is as important as money. Its not just an old person’s disease.’
