A man serving life for murdering his partner in Cornwall is fighting for the legal right to submit an assignment relating to domestic violence to the Open University (OU) for his postgraduate degree course.

The prison authorities barred the work as 'an unacceptable activity' and told Stanley Matthews, 53, he needed to address his own behaviour before undertaking research into the offending of others.

He was convicted in August 2001 of the murder of Patricia Berriman, 17, who was found with head injuries in an upstairs bedroom of a cottage between the villages of Tideford and Hatt.
