A 19-year-old Callington man has been warned he may face a jail sentence after admitting burgling a house in the town while a family slept upstairs. Christopher Charles Shakespeare of Fore Street, Callington, admitted to magistrates in Bodmin on Friday that he had entered the property at Launceston Road on May 6 and stolen a laptop computer, camera equipment and cash. The case was adjourned until Monday, June 2, to enable a pre-sentence report to be prepared, and the defendant was ordered to abide by a curfew between the hours of 10pm and 6am daily. A 17-year-old youth admitted jointly committing the offence and will appear before the Youth Court on June 16. Janet Furlonger, prosecuting, said the burglary took place in the early hours when the family was asleep upstairs in the house. There was no confrontation and the theft was not discovered until they woke that morning. Access was gained by an insecure window and the items taken included some euros and £100 in sterling. Mrs Furlonger told the court that police stopped two men in the street at 3.20am and found property later identified as having come from the house, but as they were unaware of the burglary at the time they were allowed to go on their way. When the burglary was reported later that morning the police made the connection and the pair were arrested. Shakespeare told them he had got drunk and made a full and frank admission, saying it had been a 'very silly thing to do'. Shakespeare told the court he could not remember what had happened that night as he had been very drunk after drinking from the Friday of the Bank Holiday weekend.
