AN 11-year-old who ran every day for a month to support his young cousin has raised more than £1,500.
Luke Campbell ran a mile in his home town of Torpoint each day of May to raise funds for the Tuberous Sclerosis Association (TSA) and so far has brought in an amazing £1,515, having started out with a target of just £300.
Luke’s cousin Harvey, six, was diagnosed with Tuberous Scelrosis Complex (TSC) when he was a toddler. The rare genetic disease affects every part of the body, causing non-cancerous tumours to grow on vital organs such as the kidneys, lungs, liver and skin, and in the brain; it also leads to epilepsy and other disorders.
Luke is great friends with his cousin Harvey, who lives in Lanivet, and so earlier this year, he decided he wanted to fundraise for the organisation, the Tuberous Sclerosis Association, that supports families affected by the condition.
He said: “I’m running to raise awareness of TSC and to raise funds towards the charity, and especially for my little cousin Harvey who has TSC and epilepsy. Also it’s for every family and person out there living with TSC.
“I want to raise as much money as I can for my little cousin to spread the awareness. Harvey suffers mainly with epilepsy and seizures every day. He is such a happy and loving boy.
“I feel very passionate about this. The money raised will go towards helping families with children or adults living with this disease.”
Luke ran every single day of May come rain or shine – and there was a lot of rain! says his proud grandma Sharon.
But as Luke got ready for his final mile on Bank Holiday Monday, the sun was out, residents came out to cheer him on, and his friends from Carbeile School ran alongside him too. Mayor of Torpoint Rachel Evans was there to congratulate him on the finishing line.
As Luke came down the last stretch, his little cousin Harvey was also running next to him, proudly waving his TSA flag.
“The day was a complete success!” said Sharon. “Luke was very emotional when he finished, he just couldn’t believe how many people came out and supported him. All in all a very good day, lots of happy tears and proud hearts.”
