Seasiders
reign supreme
FOR the fourth year in succession quiz whizzes the 'Seasiders' have scooped first place in the annual quiz evening organised by the Friends of Looe Community School, with 19 teams entered.
Team members Tim and Jeni Alsop, Neil Mottershead and Tony and Carol Johnson scored 54 points, with runners up 'Taliban' on 51.5. In third were The Raiders (47), 4th, L2H3 (46.5), 5th, The Paul Harrison Appreciation Society (45.5), 6th, Bonkers (41.5) and 7th, The Crotchetys (40.5). Winners of the student competition were The Useless Bunch (25.5).
Quiz master Tom Saddler said it was an excellent turnout considering the effects of flu and the weather, and £200 had been raised.
He said the brain teasers proved to be identifying national flags and famous lips.
Thanks were accorded The Friends, Pete Mundy of Barbican Stores, and the scorers and all those who helped out in any way.
First full markets
for a month
FOR the first time in several weeks after atrocious weather conditions, some of the fishing fleet have been able to venture out, with all the trawlers out on Tuesday leading to the first full market for a month on Wednesday morning. Added to this Thursday's market was the biggest for some time with a welcome return of lemons.
Figures: Weds Feb 13 - squid 320, lemons 750, plaice 120, whiting 1800, pouting 1100, conger 600, cod 550, pollack 1200, ling 130; Thurs Feb 14 - mackerel 5500, squid 270, cuttle 170, lemons 1400, whiting 2300, pollack 2500, ling 230, plaice 260, cod 1300, conger 150.
Party for
charity
THE Jailbreak team from Looe - the Looe-zers - are to hold another children's party, following on from their successful Christmas event which raised £235. The party on February 17 from 2-4pm will raise money for children with cerebral palsy, and will be held at the Admiral Boscarn Hotel. All wanting to take part should just turn up on the day.
Limpets
luncheon
A belated New Year lunch was held at Tom Sawyers on Wednesday last by the Looe Limpets, which was attended by about 40 members and friends.
Chief Limpet Fred Leese welcomed all including some new local members and two visiting freshwater Limpets from Oxford.
Tom Sawyers were thanked, the Tavern also being the venue for the Easter lunch to take place on Wednesday, April 17.
Jubilee flowers
LOOE In Bloom has described a donation of £4,000 from the Town Council as fantastic news. Secretary Maggie Perkins said the Bloomers had been hoping for a large donation as they want to make a special effort for the Queen's Golden Jubilee. This will include more displays at the St Martin's entrance to Looe and around the harbour area. They are also to have crowns made to top the hanging basket features.
Moorings work
AN indication of spring being on the way comes with the report from harbourmaster Ted Webb that repair and renewal work has begun this week on the central moorings in the river, which will take about two weeks to complete. This is in readiness for the 'doodle bugs' and yachts coming out of dry dock and being put back into the river in readiness for the tourist season which begins in earnest at Easter.
Concert cancelled
A concert by the Polperro Fishermen's Choir due to take place in the Riverside United Church, West Looe, on Saturday, February 23, has now been cancelled
Coffee morning
A coffee morning and jumble sale organised by the Looe branch of the NSPCC in aid of the charity's work in Cornwall, is to be held at the Guildhall, East Looe, on Friday, February 22. Doors open at 10am.
Cromwell's facelift
THE oil painting 'Cromwell's 1st Appearance in Parliament', which hangs in the council chamber in the Guildhall, East Looe, is to be restored. The town council is to ask Mr Derrick Worton of Looe to do the work.
The painting, by D W W Wynfield, and valued at £10,000, has been exhibited at the Royal Academy and was presented to the town of Looe in 1930 by Dr E Turner Born of Hannafore, a local GP.
Festival of the sea
LOOE'S second Festival of the Sea which takes place on June 21-23 is to receive a donation from the town council of £1,000. Preparations are now well under way for this huge event and sponsors are being sought.

Coffee with
the RNLI
THE downstairs room in the Guildhall, East Looe, is the venue for an RNLI coffee morning, tomorrow (Saturday), from 10am-12noon
Admission 50p includes coffee and there will be a souvenir stall, raffle, cakes, books and bric-a-brac.
