Police aim for

high profile

THE police have informed the town council that they aim this summer to provide high profile policing each weekend from the available staff within Looe and district. In addition the services of the Tactical Aid Group will be sought to supplement normal patrols to maintain a regular visible presence, which is regarded as an essential part of dealing with disorder in the area.

Community Action Sgt David Hurd, in thanking the council for providing funding for extra police officers for the town centre during the spring/summer last year, said the overall level of disorder reported to the police during this period was extremely low, an impressive statistic bearing in mind the numbers in the town during the busy months.

He said when the paid police were on the beat they dealt with breaches of the alcohol restriction, minor instances of public disorder and under age drinking.

Sgt Hurd said that he felt at present that the constabulary would be able to provide the level of service required for Looe from within the current budget, but would hope for the full support of the town council should he find it necessary to request additional staff, and if necessary the reinstatement of a paid policeman.

New venue

for market

LOOE'S new local produce market which is presently situated at Bridgend, West Looe, near the Millpool, is set to move over to East Looe.

The four Saturday markets on February 9 and 23, and March 9 and 23, will be held in the present building as normal, but because the daily market stallholders will move in to trade at the beginnning of the season at Easter, the produce market will have to move to a new venue.

Market co-ordinator Bethan Stagg says many different sites are presently being looked at for their suitability.

Poor weather

hampers fleet

POOR weather is still hampering the fishing fleet, but four boats did manage to venture out on Tuesday leading to a small market on Wednesday.

Auctioneer Hugh Symons of Looe Fish Selling reports there are signs of lemon soles, which is normal for this time of year, so everyone hopes the weather eases off soon.

Pop up to

book fair

LAST year's fundraising by the Friends of Looe Primary resulted in the purchase of essential extra equipment for the school and the committee would like to thank all the parents and those who supported the various events.

Fundraising continues, this time with a book fair at the school next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, February 4, 5 and 6.

As usual books for all ages, both fiction and non-fiction will be on sale and everyone is welcome to come along and browse, and hopefully purchase, between 2.30pm-5pm each day.

Previous book fairs have been successful in earning the school new books for the library and classrooms so the Friends are hoping lots of people will pop in and help them to help the children.

New town

councillor

Phil Gibson was co-opted as a new town councillor at a special meeting on Monday evening. He replaces Mrs Carole Andrews.

The selection was via an interview, and there were five candidates all told, the other four being Brian Penrose-Toms, John Charnock, John Pennington Hare and David Proffitt.

Plan to knock

down hotel

CHAIRMAN of the town council's planning committee, councillor and deputy mayor Frances Kenshole, has asked for better attendances at meetings.

She said as few as three councillors have turned up on occasions and more support was needed, especially when dealing with important plans within the town.

She has asked that all six planning councillors make an effort to attend the meeting of Monday, February 18, to consider an application from Mr and Mrs V Bennett of the Bodrigan Hotel.

They are seeking planning consent for the demolition of the hotel, and the redevelopment of the site into 16 flats comprising three 3 bedroomed units, ten 2 bedroomed and three 1 bedroomed.

The hotel is situated in Hannafore Road, West Looe, and enjoys a panoramic view over the harbour and coastline.

The plan comes before Caradon West planners on Thursday, February 21.
