Children's competitions
just the job for pirates
THE Looe Job Centre in Fore Street has been supporting the Pirates and Buccaneers, who roam the port on Tuesdays, by organising a number of ongoing competitions for children, as their contribution to entering into the spirit of the community.
Customer Services Manager Clare Clarke says the aim is not only to be supportive of the Town Forum and SECTA who organise the pirates, but also hopefully to get more visits from adults as they accompany their children into the centre.
'We still have many jobs on our books, particularly in the tourism industry and care sector,' she said. 'Anyone is welcome to pop in to see what's on offer and have an informal chat or to gain advice about vacancies.'
The competitions on offer include 'guess the name of the parrot', sponsored by Calweton Veterinary Centre, a colouring competition (collect the picture from the centre), 'guess the weight of the pirates' treasure', sponsored by Looe Valley Singers, and 'find the wanted parrot' - sponsors of this one are Bradleys Estate Agents who have produced 10 posters to be found in various shops in East Looe.
The competitions, all run from the centre, are open to children in three age groups, from 3-5, 6-9 and 10-12.
All winners, who will be notified in advance, will be invited to attend a presentation at the centre on Tuesday, August 14, and will receive gift vouchers.
Naval surprise
for George
A party from Looe of 11 ex-services personnel and some partners, all senior citizens, and between them representing the Royal Navy, Royal Airforce, the Army and Women's Royal Marine Service, recently enjoyed a wonderful day out at HMS Seahawk, Culdrose.
They joined a one-hour conducted tour of the station, during which time Mr George Paramore was given the thrill of meeting his grandson, a Petty Officer in the RN, who works on the new Merlin helicopter. The meeting was specially arranged by the Navy as a surprise.
The visitors noticed the airfield was extremely busy with its seven squadrons, and it seemed to be non stop flying, and they spotted RAF Tornados, a Fishery Protection twin engined plane and several light aircraft.
The Looe Lions loaned the party their community mini bus for the day, which was driven by Mr John Enever,.
All agreed it had been a most enjoyable day out and organiser Pam Butler has promised a follow-up.
Holiday club
for youngsters
THE St Martin with St Nicholas Parish are holding their annual summer Children's Holiday Club between August 13-17, and are in need of various materials to help the youngsters with collage and craft works.
The organisers are appealing for 'bits and bobs' of unwanted red, yellow or orange wool, some beads, buttons and oddments of fabric, and are asking that they be left in the boxes provided in both churches.
The Rev Linda Smith and Mary Henley say they are planning some creative and thoughtful games, including lots of general fun, and would be really grateful for help to assist them entertain the young children of the parish.
