A Limpet lunch

for the mayor

LOOE Limpets were honoured by civic patronage at their latest lunch at the end of March, at Tom Sawyers, Hannafore, when the mayor and mayoress, Ron and Pat Overd were in attendance.

They were welcomed by Chief Limpet, Fred Leese, along with a transatlantic visitor. Limpet Peter King thanked Tom sawyers for their usual warm welcome and excellent food.

Emma Louise

to the rescue

LOCAL boatman David Haines went to the rescue of the yacht Polgray which found itself in difficulty in Looe harbour on Wednesday morning.

The owner, having just had the vessel's mast put on by crane was on the West Looe side heading up river towards moorings, when he became stuck on a sandbank, sideways on to the tide.

It was in danger of tipping over, and observing the scene, the lifeboat secretary and Launching Authority Jonathan Brice, alerted Mr Haines, aboard the ferryboat Emma Louise. He quickly went alongside the yacht and put another person on board to help attach a tow rope. He was able to pull the yacht off the sandbank and take it downstream into deeper water, where it moored alongside Middleton's Corner to await the evening tide.

Museum open

for Easter

THE Old Guildhall Museum in Higher Market Street, East Looe, will be re-opening today (Good Friday), and will open daily from 11.30am - 4.30pm until Friday, April 20. It will then close until the Spring Bank Holiday and from then on remain open until the end of September.

The museum, which is well worth a visit, is a listed Ancient Monument, dating from the 15th century. It still houses the magistrates' bench, the stocks and pillory since its days as a magistrates' court.

There are many interesting artefacts, photographs and paintings relating to the history of Looe.

Extra constable

on the beat

LOOE Town Council's decision to employ an extra policeman in the town gets off the ground this Easter weekend, and will continue on selected dates for an indefinite period.

The police will be keeping records so the effectiveness of the scheme can be reviewed with councillors.

Valley Singers

THE Looe Valley Singers are to celebrate their 18th anniversary with a spring concert in the Riverside United Church, West Looe, on Friday next, April 20. The doors will open at 6.50pm for a 7.30pm start and tickets at £3 are available from Mariannes Fashions, Bradleys Estate Agents and Barbican News.

The special guests will be the Glee Singers, performing unaccompanied male close harmony.

Boats ready

for season

THERE was a hive of activity around Looe harbour on Wednesday, in readiness for the beginning of the season, when more than a dozen newly painted boats were lifted from their dry moorings back on to the river.

The work was carried out by Mr Cradick of St Germans with his crane, the day trip boats going in from the West quayside and the ferry boats from the East.
