Riverside bazaar

raised £1,500

SATURDAY'S poor weather was offset by the warm and sparkling interior of Riverside United Church which was decorated specially for the annual bazaar and gift day.

A new stall containing Christmas presents and decorations owed much to the skills of Jean Horswell and Sheila Welchman, while Jenny and Norman's 'famous' pickle and chutney stall was as popular as ever.

Due to the hard work of the church folk, the support of many house bound members and the loyalty of local people, the event was a great success raising £1,500 for church funds.

Throughout the year Riverside donates a large amount to various charities and this week alone saw special collections for the European Children's Trust, Methodist Homes for the Aged and the Bible Society.

Future events in December will be in aid of the RNLI, Local and National Homeless, Blind Babies and local children in need.

Support for

play area

THE secretary of TRAP (Tenants and Residents Association, Polperro), Mrs Tina Roberts, says they have been delighted with the response to their first fundraising effort for a new children's play area, especially since the weather was so bad on the day.

Special thanks are accorded the three people who gave generous donations amounting to £70, and to local pubs and shops who gave raffle prizes.

The final total was £290.70 which is a good start for the project.

Coffee for Hospice

THE Looe and District fund raising committee for Mount Edgcumbe Hospice would like to thank everyone who contributed towards the coffee morning at Looe Golf Club, on Thursday last, which raised a grand total of £800.

The committee say this was done through much effort not least the kindness of the staff and Mike Tilbrook of the Golf Club who allowed the venue to be used free of charge. The water colour of Looe donated by Brian Duck greatly helped to swell the funds, and Mr and Mrs Aitken were the winners.

Thanks were also given to Pat Taroni and Emma Hawke, in charge of coffee, the Downderry group for contributions to the cake stall, the tombola ladies, those who donated raffles and everyone for their generous support.

Playgroup's gift

for Alex

THE committee of West Looe Playgroup have reported a total of £275 was raised from their recent hallowe'en disco. It has been decided that a £100 will be donated to the 'Let Me Hear Your Voice Alex' charity, which has been set up to help the family of Alex Lane, who is autistic and presently undertaking some specialist 'early intervention behavour' treatment. Alex's older brother Ryan is a member of the playgroup.

Torches and carols

TOWN clerk Colin Easterbrook has been asked by the council to purchase 600 new torches, at a cost of approximately £600, for Looe's annual torchlight procession and carol service. It takes place this year on Thursday, December 14, at 7pm.

Marshall in charge of the proceedings will be Councillor Colin Shore, and stewards of the individual processions, which begin from West Looe fire station, the Millpool, The Globe Inn and the seafront, converging on to Buller Quay car park, will be Councillors Wally Scarah (deputy mayor), Dave Peat, Caroline Andrews and Roy Perriment.

Funds needed

for fireworks

THIS year's annual fireworks display in Polperro was so spectacular it has led to many people asking how a small village can afford to put on such a show.

In answer, Teddy Pilcher, who was one of the collectors on the night, says it is the result of a lot of fundraising, such as the pub quizzes, and donations, but there is a shortfall. The display cost £1,915, plus £145 for extra safety equipment. A further total of £586.57 was raised from the village envelope scheme, but this came from only 56 very generous people who returned donations, from 450 envelopes delivered. The collection at the event raised £432.

'We don't want this popular event to 'fizzle' out', said Teddy, 'so if anyone feels they would like to make a donation to the fireworks fund they can do so at Barry and Brenda Thomas's shop or to Tony White at the Post Office.

Because of Polperro's unique setting the fireworks illuminate the harbour in a breathtaking way, and the noise booms around the surrounding rocky cliffs, putting on a very special show.

No lights for

slipway

A proposal by town councillor Les Young for lights to be placed on the Hannafore slipway was not seconded at the town council meeting on Monday last, and was therefore lost.

A tender of £1,400 plus VAT for the work had been received but councillors said there were many such areas in the town and funds were not available to light them all.

Councillor Young said the slipway was a popular walking place in the evenings, and when there was no moonlight it was very dark and quite dangerous.

Pre School bazaar

THE Barbican Pre-school will be holding a Christmas bazaar on Saturday November 25 at the Guildhall, East Looe from 10 am to 12 noon.
