Road plan

premature

Looe Town council is to inform Cornwall Highways that it considers plans to impose a no right turn ban on the North Road/Polperro Road junction, West Looe, to be premature.

At Monday's meeting it was pointed out that under the proposals for a supermarket on the Millpool, a new mini roundabout would be in operation in the vicinity. Councillors decided that whether or not the supermarket was granted permission, there should be pressure for a better road safety scheme to be into place.

Gifts for Florin

COLLECTIONS are now being made by St Martin and St Nicholas Churches towards making Christmas a happy time for Florin, a young boy in Romania. He is under the care of the Cornish charity, the White Cross Mission, which helps to provide for children in Romanian orphanages.

Anyone wishing to make donations should contact Patsy Meaden.

Pulling to a close

AFTER five years Mrs Pauline Tamlin is standing down from running the monthly 100 Club on behalf of Looe Rowing Club, due to pressure of work. However, she says to intend operating the draw for those who have paid in advance, but with reduced prizes, the last draw to take place in March. Anyone who would like to take the Club on should contact Pauline at Barbican Spar on 01503 262713.

The results for November are: Miss Jarvis (100), Norma Edmondson (55), Sheila Portman (78).

Fun auction for Alex

TELEVISIONS, microwaves, mobile phones, antiques and restaurant meals, are just a few of about 150 items that have been generously donated for the special auction at J Arthurs (Fore Street) tonight, (Friday), November 17, as a fundraiser for the 'Let Me Hear Your Voice Alex' charity.

Alex Lane, who is autistic, is the young son of Barbican couple Jeremy and Charlotte, who just over four weeks ago embarked upon the Early Behavioural Intervention Programme form of treatment. It will cost about £18,000 per year for the next two years but Alex's delighted parents say that already they have seen an improvement. 'Alex has already learned to say 20 words, we are thrilled' said Jeremy.

Local fish buyer Sean Barrett will begin wielding the gavel at 8pm during what promises to be a fun evening. Prior to the auction about 30 people with collecting buckets will be taking part in a three legged race around the town, and there will be a disco at the end of the event.

J Arthurs is open for the evening to anyone who would like to support Alex's fund and it is hoped there will be a really good attendance.

Harbour trustees

report good progress

THE annual meeting of Polperro Harbour Trustees took place at the Village Hall on Saturday, November 4, when the nominees for the three vacant seats - A Pagett, C Pannewitz and T Pilcher - were re-elected, there being no other nominations.

In his annual report, the chairman, Mike Blackmore, referred to the tragic loss of fisherman Daniel Kebble, who was the youngest trustee. 'His loss is still felt by everybody and he is sadly missed' he said. 'He will always be remembered with deep affection'.

Mr Blackmore reported that trustees have made significant progress in bringing Polperro harbour up to date with the Trust Ports Review and proposals have already been overviewed by the DETR. Any queries regarding the Review can be brought up at the Trust's monthly meetings, or contact should be made to Tony White or in writing to the clerk.

He said continuous pressure has been put upon SW Water to clean up the sewerage system which by their own admission was described as crude, and it has been agreed to commence remedial work to manholes, pipes and concrete casings throughout the village and harbour.

Outlined ongoing projects were the restoration of the Duke of Cornwall pier to prevent the flooding of the harbour and properties in the lower part of the village. Tony White was thanked for his persistence in obtaining grant funding to help with the considerable cost of £139,000, and all the funding bodies for their help.

The old quay stores had been demolished and new stores built with the quay being resurfaced. This will bring the port up to date with current health/safety regulations. This project was made possible with grant aid together with help from the Heritage Museum and interest free loans from fishermen and local residents.

The trustees will also be looking at Objective One Funding for future projects which include painting and remedial work to the storm gate, improved harbour facilities, promoting tourism, further employment opportunities, and creating the post of a salaried harbour master.

The Heritage Museum and Ryder Project continue to be great attractions and thanks were accorded to all those involved. It was agreed more sources of income would have to be looked at, as with ever increasing legislation the costs to the harbour continue to escalate.

The chairman ended by giving his personal thanks to everyone involved in the continuing good work on behalf of the harbour. The satisfactory treasurer's report was given by John Gilbert.

Some trustees and members of the public who did attend, expressed the opinion that it was a shame so few people from the village turned up for the annual meeting. It was pointed out that the date had been well publicised. It was thought it could mean people were happy with the way the harbour was being run or that there was apathy to meetings in general.

Members of the community are reminded that the first half an hour of the monthly meeting is open for questions from the public. Letters can also be sent to the clerk at the Mawdsley Room, The Warren, Polperro.
