Seasiders are quiz champs

More than £200 was raised at the very successful annual quiz evening organised by the Friends of Looe Community School, when 21 teams took part.

The entertaining and competitive event was won for the second year in succession by the 'Seasiders' of Looe, alias Tim Allsop, Glenn Hall, Jenny Allsop, Tony Johnson and Neil Mottershead, despite strong opposition from a teachers' and family team "3+3" (Mrs Delf, Mrs Shepherd and Miss Tombs).

FLCS are grateful to everyone involved for making the quiz such a successful and enjoyable event, especially Pete and Helen of Barbican News for their extra support.

Winners were: Seasiders,"3+3", What's Up Doc, Odds and Sods , Paraders, L2H3.

Youth Speaks successes

The students at Looe Community School who took part in this year's public speaking competition for schools, "Youth Speaks", sponsored by Liskeard Rotary Club, are celebrating their success.

The Year 9 entry (Lower Secondary) on the subject "Secrets" took the first prize. Speaker was Jossy Yapp, chairperson Sam Moody and the vote of thanks given by Daniel Higgins.

In the Upper Secondary section the Year 10 entries also did exceptionally well, gaining second and third places, the first place going to Liskeard School and Community College, who were the hosts.

Speaking on the "Life and Times of a Milkman" was Morwenna Kinver, with Claire Stacey as chairperson and Dunja Klinger-Moore giving the vote of thanks, while Michael Fordham spoke on J R R Tolkin, with Marvin Firth in the chair and Alex Norgett giving the vote of thanks.

This is the second time the school has entered the competition.

Spring sunshine for flower ladies

A dull and dreary afternoon burst into sunshine for the members of Looe and District Flower Arrangement Society meeting in Pelynt Village Hall, when the demonstrator, Angela Roose, chose as her title, 'Spring Spectacular'.

The exhibits ranged from daffodils and tulips in a terracotta pot to roses and lilies displayed in a tall bronze jug. Another design was worked on to a trellis. Angela's final work was in a tall blue glass vase. She bunched some blue iris together as her focal point and surrounded them with alstromeria to make a striking display. Marilyn Berry gave the vote of thanks.

Among business matters, chairman Bridget Clark informed members of the death of the area chairman, Lucy Pearce. She also asked for some fundraising ideas.

Competition winners for an exhibit of five flowers and foliage were Bridget Clark, Sheila Welchman and Joy Carey.

The next meeting is on Tuesday, March 7, when the demonstrator will be Merna Kendall.

Major repairs at Threshers

Threshers in Fore Street, East Looe, is closed while some major repairs to the building, estimated at £40,000, are carried out. Contractors Hill and Lang (Plymouth), are working on internal and structural strengthening because the building had started to collapse.

They are installing new structural steel frames within the shop to stop the building twisting and sinking.

All calls to the store have been diverted to the Liskeard branch and the stock taken to other stores while the repairs are carried out. It is hoped the branch will be open for business again by the beginning of March.
