Festive decoration winners announced

The Liskeard and Looe Round Table under the chairmanship of Francis Marshall took on the role of judging the best decorated premises in the town over the Christmas period, the competition being split into four categories.

The Tablers say the judging was extremely difficult because of the high standard achieved by a number of premises. The winners will be presented with shields and plaques with the runners-up receiving certificates at a presentation ceremony in the near future. All winners will be notified by the Town Forum when that is to take place.

Winners were: Best public house - The Old Salutation Inn; shop or business premises - Cancer Research Campaign Shop; cafe or restaurant - The Golden Guinea; private residence (as viewed from the outside) - Endsleigh, Shutta, East Looe.

Charity status for Friends

It has been agreed by the Charity Commission to grant the Friends of Looe Primary School a charity status, which will enable applications from more sources for the funding of special school projects.

Last year the Friends raised £1,633.94 for the school library, and the new projects will include computer equipment, play equipment for the infants and school bags and sun hats.

The school is presently appealing for volunteers to help in the bookshop on Fridays between 12 and 1.15pm on a rota basis. Anyone interested should contact Penny on (01503) 264750.

For the RNLI

The Looe branch of the RNLI are holding a fund raising coffee morning at the Guildhall on Saturday, January 22 from 10am-12noon , to which all are welcome.

Former evacuee receives OBE

Former town and district councillor Mrs Jean Grimer is delighted with the news that one of her six brothers, Professor Michael Loretto of Birmingham, received the OBE in the New Year's Honours, for his services to science and technology.

Along with two of his brothers, David and Alec, Professor Loretto was evacuated to Liskeard during the Second World War, and attended the Grammar School, although Mrs Grimer says they used to abscond on a regular basis to visit their Auntie Babs (Mrs Albert Bersey) of Treboul Farm so they could play on Downderry beach!

Professor Loretto has done much research at Birmingham University in material science leading to developments in artificial limbs such as hips and knee joints.

Town Forum to meet

The first meeting in the New Year of Looe Town Forum will take place on Tuesday, January 25, at the Community School at 7pm. All members of the public are encouraged to attend and take part.
