SCHOOL students from Looe showcased their creativity at a special workshop on the opening day of the town’s Festival of Words event.

Creative juices were flowing at the Guildhall earlier this week as pupils from Looe Community Academy and Looe Primary Academy gathered to create their own poems relating to this year’s festival theme, Bridge of Words.

The event was attended by Jane Day, manager of East Looe Town Trust, the organisation that generously donated the Guildhall to the festival for the week free of charge. Jane, along with Looe students, helped cut the ribbon outside the venue to mark the first day of the week-long festival which runs until this Sunday (October 4).

A spokesperson for Looe Community Academy said: “Well done to Year 8’s for creating and presenting original poems about the theme of Bridges. All represented Looe Community Academy with decorum and we’re super proud. Big thank you for the invitation, let's make this a yearly event!”

The Looe Festival of Words brings together readers, writers, and lovers of language for a week of workshops, talks, and word-inspired activities. The free, volunteer-run event focuses on local talent and community-led activities, which aims to support the town’s creative communities and draw visitors to the area.

Festival volunteer Sharon Watters, along with Lesley and Andy Winfield, helped to organise a number of workshops that was specifically for youngsters in the local area. Similar events for home schooled and dyslexic children also took place throughout the week.

Work and art produced by the children will be on display at the festival’s book fair at Hannafore Point Hotel today (Saturday, October 3, 10am to 4pm).

With help of the community, it is hoped that events like this will return for next year’s outing.
