THE community of Looe came together at the weekend to celebrate 50 years of friendship with French twin town Quiberon.

A delegation from the Brittany town, who visited Looe to mark five decades of twinning, attended a special flag-raising ceremony on Saturday.

Held at the Looe War Memorial, the ceremony brought together representatives of both towns, including the mayor of Quiberon, Patrick Le Roux, as well as local community organisations and residents.

The flag-raising event was followed by a reception at the Guildhall and a special performance by Looe Primary Academy pupils.

The ceremony was part of a varied programme of activities which were organised to celebrate the long-standing relationship between the two towns.

Events included a guided walking tour of Looe, a visit to the local RNLI lifeboat station, a boat trip around Looe Island, a reception at the heritage centre, and a celebratory lunch at The Sardine Factory Restaurant, which included the signing of a commemorative scroll marking this important milestone.

The 50th anniversary celebrations helped to strengthen links between the two towns, as well as encourage a new generation to become involved in the relationship.

“The anniversary weekend was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on five decades of friendship, cultural exchange and community links between Looe and Quiberon, while looking ahead to the future of this valued partnership.

“Looe Town Council would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the celebrations and helped make the weekend such a memorable occasion.

“Here's to the next 50 years of friendship between Looe and Ville de Quiberon.”
