This week we lead on a proposal that could see some of Cornwall’s branch passenger railway lines reinstated. The Government is currently considering suggestions for reversing some of the cuts to these routes that took place in the 1960s. But the experts behind a £1.2bn rail upgrade for the South West say that the region needs and deserves investment to balance what’s happening in the midlands and the north.

Inside, a major new project to create a post-16 skills centre for health courses and Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in North and East Cornwall has got confirmation of its funding, and building is set to start at the end of 2020.

And in a follow-up to last week’s story about the extra care units to be built in Liskeard, a cross-party group of councillors says Cornwall Council’s constitution needs to change: they say they’re concerned that there was no scrutiny of the 30-year contract awarded to the company that’ll be building and running the facilities.

Also in this week’s edition – shoppers have expressed worries about a lack of social distancing at the supermarket, and raise the question of whether wearing face coverings ought to be more enforced.

In our Sports section this week we follow the cricket as players progress through the Bond Timber Trophy league. There’s a report from Callington’s match against Grampound Road and all the scoreboards and upcoming fixtures for your perusal. Meanwhile, on the back page, Dave Potham gives us a run-down of the fixtures for the opening games of this season’s St Piran League, setting the scene for who’ll meet who at the start of next month as football gets going again in the district. Inside there are reports from Angling and Golf and a piece on plans for Cornwall’s short mat bowls clubs.

We have a great extended Farming section this week, starting with a lovely story of a young brother and sister who are raising their own pedigree flock, putting in all the work and the investment themselves with pocket money and show winnings. Look out for the Allins on TV in the next month! With market reports, expert advice and a range of news affecting the sector, there’s lots to read.

As well as this there’s our Open For Business section with dedicated homes and gardens and antiques pages, news of how a local music studio is adapting to the new normal, and advice for employees and those who have booked holidays.

With Nature Watch, Puzzles and more, look out for your latest edition of The Cornish Times, out in the shops today!
