ACTIVISTS will be outside the offices of Cornish MPs later today as a progress report on the Government’s climate change commitments comes before parliament.

In their 2019 report, the independent Committee on Climate Change (CCC) found that only one of the stated 25 recommendations had been acted upon in the UK, says the Extinction Rebellion (XR) movement.

Tomorrow’s report is likely to make for just as alarming reading, says XR, with the document likely to state that the Government is failing in its commitments to reach net zero carbon emmissions by 2050, a target already described by environmentalists as ’woefully inadequate’.

’Extinction Rebellion activists will mark this day throughout Cornwall and nationally by holding safe demonstrations outside the offices of MPs,’ said a spokesperson.

’Environment Minister, George Eustice, MP for Camborne and Redruth, will be a particular target as he consistently votes against measures to protect the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

’ In 2015 Eustice also received a donation of £5000 from Neil Record, a director of climate science denial campaign group, the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GMPF). And our local South East Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray, who is a member of the Environment, Food and Rural affairs committee, also consistently votes against measures to mitigate climate change.’

XR members and supporters will be on The Parade in Liskeard at 12 noon.
