Harold takes the overall top snap

A photographic exhibition organised by the Wesley Guild at Liskeard Methodist church has provided some eye-catching pictures.

The competition has seven classes, including Rural scene, By the Sea and Man's Handiwork. Thanks for judging has gone to John Rapson and his assistants David Hambly and Molly Burleigh, and Geoff Brown of Colourcare who donated films which were presented to all winners.

Sam Landrigan took the junior section, which concentrated on 'Animals'. Senior section winners were as follows: Winifred Jeans (portrait); rural scene (Harold Snowdon); Ray Onions (At work); By the sea (Jenny Collins); Pamela Morcom (plants); Harold Snowdon (animals); Man's Handiwork (John Gurdler). The overall winner, for his rural scene, was Harold Snowdon.

All of the photographs, with 20 which were highly commended, have been exhibited in the church hall and will also be on view in the church on Sunday (January 16). The prizes were presented by Guild vice president, Doris Lobb. Mr Rapson said the most outstanding class was plants, and there were some good portraits.

County plan for old school

An application has been made by Cornwall county council to enable social services to use the old Liskeard junior school building in Varley Lane as offices for three years.

Caradon councillors, who have been consulted over the matter, have been told the application relates to original stone built buildings on the northern part of the site, and appears to be retrospective.

A report from Caradon officers said: 'There are not considered to be any general objections to this proposal. While the parking is limited and access restricted, this is a town centre site with public transport available, and with a nearby public car park. Given that the proposal is for a temporary period the scheme would not necessarily jeopardise the Liskerrett centre redevelopment proposal on the site.'

It is hoped to use the old school building for a community/arts centre for Liskeard.
