LISKEARD mayor Cllr David Braithwaite led tributes at a special service of remembrance marking the anniversary of VJ Day on Sunday (August 16).

The service remembered those who served and died in the Far East during the Second World War.

It was conducted by Reverend Mark Wade, chaplain to the Royal British Legion in Liskeard.

Wreaths were laid by the mayor and representatives of the Royal British Legion, Royal Naval Association, Merchant Navy and Navy Medical Services. Those gathered also observed a minute’s silence to honour the fallen and remember the sacrifices made by servicemen and women.

VJ Day, on August 15, 1945, marked Japan’s surrender and the effective end of the Second World War, following years of brutal fighting across Asia and the Pacific.
