AFTER more than a year’s wait, the Caradon Youth Theatre are back with their production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary musical is celebrating 50 years on stages all over the world.

And in South East Cornwall, the show will be performed by talented young actors and singers in the atmospheric surroundings of the Carnglaze Caverns, and an ancient parish church.

Looking through the eyes of Judas?Iscariot, the?timeless, powerful rock opera?details the events of the last week of Christ’s life with an unforgettable score that includes?’Superstar’,?’I Don’t Know How To Love Him’?and?’Gethsemane’.?

The 14 young performers of the Caradon Youth Theatre bring an electric energy to the most well known story of all time,?and are supported by four piece rock band, headed up by musical director Kate Rogers.

Before the first lockdown, Kate was working with West End vocal coach Steven Luke Walker, whose credits include ‘Wicked’, ‘Waitress’, ‘BIG’ and the films ‘The Greatest Showman’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘Aladdin’. He was working closely with the cast to conquer the score’s demanding vocals.

“We were so lucky to have Steven in our early rehearsals,” says Kate.

“This is an ambitious show - the acting and vocals are really tough.”

Whatever your religious beliefs, this is a brutal tale of conflict, betrayal and love. The dynamic, dark and moving scenes question loyalty, strength and humanity itself, so who better to bring this story to life than the teenagers of today?

“This young company have been waiting now for well over a year to perform this show, and we cannot express how proud of them we are,” says director Nic Early.

“It’s been a long wait and performing live next week will be well deserved. Audiences won’t be disappointed with our re-imagining of this popular classic – it’s one not to be missed!”

Caradon Youth Theatre is part of The Early Energy Centre which is an ‘Out of School Setting’ provider of activities for children and young people. The government recognise this work as important for the mental health and well-being of young people.

Jesus Christ Superstar will be staged at Carnglaze Caverns near St Neot on Thursday 3 June, and at St Martin’s Church, Liskeard on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 June. All performances start at 7.30pm (doors from 6.30pm)

Performances will adhere to current Covid-19 Government guidelines (a maximum of two households can sit together and masks must be worn unless exempt). The cast, band and crew will be taking lateral flow tests before each performance.

Strict 50% capacity and advisory age 11+ due to violent scenes depicting the crucifixion and Judas’ suicide.
