AN application to build 16 bungalows has been refused after concerns were raised about the houses' cost and effect on the landscape. Caradon District Council's Planning Control Committee West turned down proposals to build 16 sheltered housing units at Rame View, East Looe, after receiving a number of complaints from residents. The two-bedroom bungalows were proposed as low-cost, affordable units for the over-50s. However, planning officers told councillors: 'While the submitted planning appraisal implies that the housing would be affordable, after discussion with the applicant and agent, the development is considered to comprise of general market development in the countryside.' Councillors were also advised that there is a need for sheltered housing in Cornwall because the number of over-65s living in the county is expected to rise by 70,000 in the next 20 years. Councillors refused the application saying that it represented an unjustified and undesirable extension of the town which would be harmful to the character of the area.
