Whilst I tend to concur with most of J.G. Holmes's assessment of the Chilean tragedy (24/3/2000), I cannot agree that Mrs Thatcher's gratitude to Pinochet is linked to her election success after the Falklands War.
I believe her acceptance of Pinochet's help during those uncertain days was solely motivated by her desire to assist and protect, in any way, those she had rightly sent to the South Atlantic in furtherance of a just cause.
Undoubtedly, her recent 'payback' to Pinochet was over the top, but then that's Maggie.
Whilst we may like or loathe her politics, we should remember that making decisions in times of crisis is not for the faint hearted. In the circumstances, her decisive leadership matched the moment.
