Saturday (July 2) marks 10 years since the introduction of legislation which banned smoking indoors in enclosed public places and workplaces.

Ten years ago 21% of people in Cornwall smoked, and this has now fallen to 15.7%. The Stop Smoking Service has helped more than 26,000 people to quit since 2007.

In the last year alone, the prevalence has fallen from 18.2% in 2015 to 15.7% in 2016, and whilst still slightly higher than the national average it has fallen by a greater percentage, says Cornwall Council.

But a third of people who work in routine and manual jobs (such as factory workers, or labourers) in Cornwall are still smoking (32.8%) and 10% of mothers here are still smokers when they give birth to their child.
