Callington’s policing team has been quizzing drivers on the purpose of their journey as patrols to enforce the Government’s strict rules on movement are upped.

’We’ve been out and about stopping vehicles while socially distancing to keep you all (and ourselves safe), and asking what is so essential about their journey,’ said a police spokesperson.

’We’ve stopped over 100 vehicles. If you are a key worker please ensure you are able to prove this with either ID or a letter from your company.’

The Neighbourhood Policing Team said that there were ’still too many people out and about with people who aren’t members of their immediate family, still too many people not socially distancing, and still too many vehicles on the road’.

’Essential travel is permitted, this DOES NOT mean driving to a local beauty spot to have your daily exercise. It is now advised that your walk, run or cycle should start from your home address to restrict accidental ‘meets’ or accidents,’ said the policing team.

’Essential travel also does not mean driving to the supermarket to buy just your weekly lottery ticket or cigarette papers! Essential travel is travel to and from work, if you can not work from home, and for essential supplies! Please stay home, help save lives and help support our NHS who are working tirelessly through this unprecedented time in our lives.’
