A CAMPAIGN by Active Cornwall to help providers of sport and physical activity spot the signs of mental health issues has proved so successful that it’s being expanded.
The free mental health awareness course aims to build confidence, so that coaches, managers and mentors can support those experiencing problems and help them thrive in and out of community clubs and organisations.
Active Cornwall secured funding to provide 300 places to sports clubs in the county, but due to its success it’s now been opened up to all activity providers.
Craig Handford, from Active Cornwall, said: “Our recent campaign proved really popular and off the back of Mental Health Awareness Week we began thinking how we could do more to offer this great opportunity to more people.
“As such we’re now offering everyone in Cornwall who run activities the chance to sign up free of charge.”
One in four people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year. By enrolling on the course you’ll gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to create a positive environment that ensures people will enjoy the benefits of being active.
The course is being run by UK Coaching and is split into four modules covering 1) building resilience, self-esteem and confidence, 2) adapting sessions to make them more inclusive, 3) enabling and supporting mental health recovery and 4) tackling stigma and discrimination.
Places are limited and the offer can only be extended until the end of May, so anyone wishing to sign up should do so quickly.
