LOCAL groups have been decorating trees and choosing their favourite carols ahead of a Christmas Tree Festival at Liskeard’s Wesley Church which is set to open today (Saturday December 12).

Thanks to electrician Mark Pengelly who has affixed lights to the church ceiling, and all the people who have come into the church this week to place a tree, the event will go ahead with just as much sparkle as ever, says Methodist Family Worker Helen Gardner.

Melissa and Tanya and their children from the Wesley Toddler Group were among those getting a tree ready and their carol was The Starry Night. Also there was Margaret Hawken from the Eventide Care Home, who urged people to listen to the words of Eventide’s chosen carol Silent Night. She said: “We’ve had such a difficult year but we hope for much better things in 2021. There’s lots of hope all round.”

Emily Mays had been decorating a tree on behalf of Esther Hall and staff at FD Hall and Son. She said: “Our carol is We Three Kings. We’ve chosen the star as a symbol this year, and of course the chorus of We Three Kings is all about the Star of wonder, Star of night. It tells the story of the three kings following the star and using it as guidance and protection. We’ve sent all our clients a little star this year to let them know we’re thinking about them, as indeed we’re thinking about everyone in the wider community this year.”

The Liskeard Methodist Church Christmas Tree Festival opens today and will be open from 10am-2pm until Christmas Eve. To visit outside these times call 07958940263.
