Golf update - Juniors compete for the chance to meet Faldo

St Mellion Golf Club will host the 1999 Faldo Junior Series on Monday, August 16. Some of the country's top junior amateur golfers will be competing over 18 holes to qualify for the Series final at the Belfry in October and the chance to meet Nick Faldo himself.

The Faldo Junior Series event will not only feature Zane Scotland (Woodcote Park GC handicap 0.2) of recent Open championship fame (at 17 years old, the youngest ever amateur to qualify for this year's British Open), but will also feature some local talent, including Exeter's Lewis Clarke (14 years old, Exeter G&C Club, handicap 7.7), Taunton's Jon Ball (16, Oake Manor GC, 5.7) and Cullompton's Adam Isaac (16, Tiverton GC, 5.8).

With the Faldo Junior series divided up into regional qualifying rounds, the event at St Mellion is the final of three in the Southern region. Over 50 boys and girls will be participating in this region, all under 18 years of age and with handicaps ranging from 0.1 to 9.6.

The top five juniors from the region will then be selected via the Sony Order or Merit to go through to the Series Final at The Belfry, Ryder Cup venue 2001, in October. This prestigious occasion will be hosted by Faldo.
