Golf - Kirsty wins Captain's Rose Bowl

St Mellion's Lady Captain's Day last Sunday was a glorious day with Mrs Stella Hancock welcoming everyone. Her husband was the starter.

The winner of the Captain's Rose Bowl was Kirsty Gray with a score of 90-25=65.

Best scratch score was Sue Wenmoth, gross 81 on countback from Dee Peake.

Silver Division winner Sue McLaughlin on countback from Elaine Marshall 86-19=67.

Bronze Division One winner was Pat Lock 88-22=66. Bronze Division Two winner, Linda Greaves 101-35=66, runner-up Julie Booty 106-37=69.

The granny cup was won by Pat Lock. The Stableford competition for high handicaps was won by Ann Evans with 27 points.

The longest drive winner was Marjorie Greening. Nearest pin on 14th Jackie Norman. Putting competition, Carole Male. Pitching competition Maggie Bassett.

Cornish pasties and strawberries and cream were enjoyed by all at the end of a lovely day.

Whitsand Bay Veterans recently played a one from three stableford. Winners were: R Jenkins, A Sykes, D Nicholson 49 pts; T Doyle, R Cook, I Penman 47; D Rawlings, M Matthews, D Smart 45.

On Wednesday last , Whitsand visited Lostwithiel and lost 6-2. B V Rogers and J Hoar bt A Hendicott and R Edwards one-up; R Jenkins and R Cook halved with I Pascoe and L Cook; G Barrell and I H Penman lost to Brown and R Blackie 2&1; T Doyle and T Dart lost to K Pendry and J Tunna one-down; F Beresford and R Hughes lost to E Banks and A Foot 5&4; D Rawlings and P Moore halved with K Cheetham and A Todd; P West and K Bickle lost to K Harvey and A Branchflower 4&3; L Gill and D Cognegrace lost to R Conway and C Robins 5&3.

On Tuesday last, Whitsand played a two from four stableford. The winners were: C Hancock, H Dyer, R Cook, D Cognegrace 81 pts; T Doyle, J Trevill, A Sykes and L Gill 80.

The team of Peter Tyler, Mike Row and Doug Hibberd took the honours at Looe Vets on Monday when the vets played a mafia, two to count, with 90 points. Second place on count back went to Norman Allen, Brian Duck and Cecil Bourchier with 83 from John Richards, John Jones and Arthur Hallam. Gerald Bassett, Harry Foster and Mike Phillips came in with 82 followed by Albert Quinlan, Irvine Edmondson and Jeff Buckland (81), Ray Taylor, Jack Hawken and Don Clarke with 77, Jack Baxendale, William Aust and Frank Parkes with 75, followed by George Robson, Brian Taylor and John Blake with 74.

The course proved difficult on Thursday when the Birch Ward Trophy was played for. John Richards held it together to win with 35 points, closely followed by John Jones and Normal Hill-Male with 34. Other scores were Harold Ferris (33), Ray Taylor (31), Harry Foster, Jeff Buckland, Roy Duffett and Brian Taylor (30), Jack Hawkens and Dave Turner (29), Andre Radondy (28), Robin Ingold, Brian Duck and Cecil Bourchier (27), Gerald Bassett, Norman Allen and Don Clarke (26), Arthur Hallam (24), Mike Row, Irvine Edmondson, William Aust and John Hicks (23), Bob Kinch and John Blake (22), Mike Phillips (21), George Robson and Doug Hibberd (19) and Max Higson (15).

Glorious sunshine greeted competitors for the postponed Looe Golf club June Medal recently. Dave Elliott set the pace with an early morning 67, but Ian Lindsay stole the lead later in the day with a score 66. One of the last starters, Dave Merry really shook up his field to record the best score for the day and win the event with a 62.

Ian Lindsay's 66 saw him into second place in division three, while in division two, Dave Elliott's 67 was bettered on the back nine holes by the in-form Dave Bennett. Brian Shiel won the battle of the big boys from division one with yet another good round of 67 to lead Matt Edwards and Ed Goodaire both 69's.

Sunday saw the Jubilee Cup contested, with John Spurgeon showing that his absence at sea has not made a lot of difference, just before he went away he won an early season medal. Today his 62 was just enough to bring him success.Only short lead behind on showing a good return to form Barrie Evans over a gross 69 (net 63) to secure his runner-up spot. Phil Mannell just kept ahead of Mike Short to finished third, both recording 65's.
