Golf - Harold Ferris and Gerald Bassett take honours on countback

A four-ball better ball competition was played by Looe Vets on Monday, with a very good turn out from the Vets and some close scores. Harold Ferris and Gerald Bassett took the honours on count back with a score of 46 points, just ahead of the pairings of Brian Duck and Mike Phillips and Peter Tyler and Ray Petipher. Other scores were: Brian Taylor and John Richards (44); Norman Taylor and Richard Essam, John Hicks and Mike Row, Norman Allen and Alan Hockridge, Ray Taylor and Don Clarke (42); Jack Hawkens and Pete Smale (41); Irvine edmondson and Doug Hibberd (40), John Jones and Jeff Buckland, Frank Carpenter and Andre Radondy (40); Rob Ingold and Albert Quinlan, Jack Baxendale and John Blake (39); Arthur Northfield and Cecil Bourchier, Williams Aust and Richard Fletcher (37).

The Captain welcomed Jeff back from his spell in hospital and expressed the wish that he would soon be back in his usual good form.

Whitsand Bay paid a visit to Looe for the annual contest, which the home side won 5-3. The results are as follows (Looe first) - Ray Petipher and Ray Taylor beat Chris Hancock and Tom Doyle two up; Harold Ferris and Norman Allen beat Dave Foster and Les Gill by 5&3; Norman Hill-Male and Gerald Bassett beat Ray Cook and Ken Pomeroy 4&2; Arthur Northfield and Jack Hawken lost to Ray Jenkins and Del Rawlings 2&1; Brian Taylor lost to Peter Smale by 8&6; Brian Duck and Jim Cook beat Harry Dyer and Geoff Barrell by 4&3; John Blake and Andre Radondy lost to Pete West and Ken Bickle one down; Frank Carpenter and Don Clarke beat Freddy Brelsford and Ron Hughes by 6&5.

An excellent meal was provided by the club who also had the course in perfect condition.

Lostwithiel Ladies moved their Invitation day from September to June, hoping for better weather. Unfortunately, on June 6th, the heavens opened and the greens and fairways were very soon flooded, and everyone retired to the clubhouse. It was decided to hold the competition over eight holes only, as this was as far as all the ladies had managed to play. Winners with a very good 20 points were Di Sobey and Margaret Jackman.

The weather was much kinder to Jan Legard, the Ladies' Captain, for her Captain's Day. Strawberries and cream and Pimms were enjoyed on the 10th and 14th by some! The winner, with a marvellous 45 points, was Lynn Saget, second with 42 points was Lydia Stevens and third place went to Chris Ruse, who finished with 40 points.

Two Merlin League matches were played at home in June. Lanhydrock won 3-2 and the match against Trethorn was won five and a half to half. Both matches were very close games. Friday night mixed continue winners on June 4th were Lydia Stevens and Martin Joseph, June 11th Steve Raynes and Barbara Fraser, June 18th Peter Bartlett, Geoff Saunders and Jill Robertson. On Friday 25th, the Bader Cup competition was played, with the winners going on to the next round at the Stover Golf Club. Lydia Stevens and Dominic Laker progressed with 44 points.

Finally, congratulations go to Lorna coe on winning the Founders Cup, with 46 points. This cup was donated by the Stephens family, the original owners of the club, and is open to both ladies and men. Lorna is the first lady to win the cup, and she defeated husband Tony into second place with 38 points.

Looe saw yet another busy schedule at the weekend. On Saturday, the Mixed Greensome Trophy was held, this a greensome stableford event. Heading the way home were Min Green and her late substitute partner John Arnold - who finished two points clear of the husband and wife team of Steve and Penny Drake on 37. In third place with an excellent back nine of 21 points, heading several pairs on 36 points were Shirley and Harold Ferris.

On Sunday, the July Medal was held with a field of 100 competitors. John Kinver continues to show good form and shows earlier successes to be no fluke. He took the event winning 84-20=64. In Division Two, Mike Mountford chased hard with a 66 with Ron Edwards showing a good return to form with a 67.

Steve Hobbs shows he relishes competition in the higher division by taking Division One with 78-12 = 66, beating strong challenges from Brian Shiel and Paddy Sleep with a better back 9 - Brian and Paddy also with 66s. Dave Worrall may be kicking himself after a couple of poor holes left him with a 66 (but what it might have been!) to see off the challenge of Tony Lynch on the back 9 (also with a 66), to take Division Three. Alan Winterson showed good form to finish with a 67.
