The penultimate round of Looe Golf Club's Winter League was held on Sunday, and the result means that it's brewing up for a storming finish next Saturday.
In this week's round Paddy Sleep (who has brought himself right into the prizes) and Eddie Bray took the evening with an excellent 42 points in difficult conditions. In second place came Ian Hawke, Norman Hill-Male, Andy Tons, Murdo MacDonald and Tony Day all on 41 points. Ian Hawkes second place has brought him level with the long time leader Dennis Edwards, both on 12 points, but Murdo MacDonald, with this second place can nip in front of both of them to take the title.
Whilst Norman Hill-Male, Mike Mann, Bob Deacon and Jules Hignett could all potentially draw level with the leaders. There are still a host of other players that could come into contention for prizes. Everyone is hoping for good weather and an interesting result. Looe Golf Club is certainly the place to be next Saturday morning between 8.30 and 12.30 when the drama will unfold!

Spring-like weather greeted a full field of 30 teams last Friday for the Looe Golf Club Winter Open Team Competition.
Three teams finished level on 84 points, but it was up the road visitors from China Fleet, Ken Spyer, Les Ware, Roy Best and George Broady who pipped the locals with a back nine of 44 points. John Nicholls, Ian Hawke, Eddie Bray and Keith Warren were only a point behind with a back nine score of 43 points, just enough to hold off the challenge of his team consisting of club captain Tommy Hunn, Handicap secretary Mike Mann, Paul Pascoe and Keith Barrett.

The first mixed competition of the season for Lostwithiel Golf and Country Club members was held on February 19. Fine weather and good course conditions ensured it was well supported.
The winners were Lynne Taylor and Andrew Sears with 42 points. Second Rita Worswick and Colin Davey. Third Carol Kitt and John Nash.

21 Whitsand Bay Veterans played a two from 3 stableford on Tuesday. Winners were - D Rawlings, J Maddever, K Pomeroy, 85 pts; D Foster, J Fisher, K Bickle, 80; L Wilton, J Trevail, D Nicholson, 76.
On Friday 22 played a 4 BBB. Winners were - F Glanville, K Pomeroy, 43 pts; D Foster, A Sykes, 43; T Dart, D Nicholson, 42.
St Mellion have reached the final of the Cornwall team championship after defeating Mullion 7-5 in the semi final at St Enodoc.
In the morning foursomes there were a number of convincing wins for Simon Bertenshaw playing with Richard Ackland who defeated Scott Gilbert and Guy Norris 3 and 2, Peter Southcott and Nick Horrocks who comprehensively outplayed Mike Jacka and Peter Haydon 8 and 7 and Adam Frayne who together with Andy Nicholson beat Peter Gilbert and Dave Hocking 4 and 3.
The other St Mellion pairing of former captains Alan Poole and Brian Rickard were beaten 5 and 4 by Ian-Ashhendon and Lindsay Dale. This made the lunchtime score 3-1 to St Mellion. Ninth man Stuart Walsh beat A Carey 6 and 5.
To their credit Mullion put up a good fight in the afternoon singles winning the first three matches.
Nick Horrocks was beaten 3 and 2 by Scott Gilbert; Peter Southcott lost 4 and 3 to Guy Norris and Andy Nicholson lost one down to Dave Hocking.
The Ship was steadied by Alan Poole who beat Peter Haydon 5 and 4 and Adam Frayne who defeated Mike Jacka 5 and 3. Darren Desmond was beaten 3 and 2 by Lindsay Dale but when Simon Bertenshaw, who was three under the card, beat Ian Ashendon 6 and 4, St Mellion had reached the six points required. In the final singles match Richard Ackland beat Peter Gilbert 2 and 1.
The final will be between St Mellion and Newquay at Perranporth GC on Sunday March 12 with an 8.30 am start.
St Mellion were not so fortunate in the Cornwall Bowl semi final when they were beaten 3-2 by St Austell at Trethorne GC in what was a very close match indeed. In the early stages St Mellion appeared to be in control but there was a swing in the matches towards the end of each of them and in the end St Austell ran out deserving winners.
Eamonn Drummond and Alan Shannon lost on the 19th to Alan Dibb and Dave Morgan; Matthew Braithwaite and Alan Cookson won one up against Dave Behennah and Jim Bowden; John Marquand and Mike Sutcliffe lost two down to Phil Rowe and Alan Tucker; Niven Penprase and Dave Scantlebury lost two down to Colin Matthews and Ian Chambers; Alan Pugh and Dave Zasikowski won one up against Chris Stribley and Kevin Cole.
A Texas Scramble was played by Looe Vets on Monday when Gerald Bassett, Alan Reed and John Jones took the honours with 64.7. Norman Hill-Male, Harry Foster and Norman Jenkins returned 67.4, Richard Fletcher, William Aust and Bob Arcarnley 67.5; Dave Turner, Ray Taylor and Irvine Edmondson 69.6; Fred Joce, Ron Ingold and Cecil Bourchier 70.6; Ed Harris, Ray Petipher and Arthur Northfield 70.8; Frank Carpenter, Frank Parkes 73.6; Bob Newman, John Blake and Alan Newman 73.9; Norman Allen, John Richards and Norman Taylor 74.2; Jeff Buckland, Bob Kinch and John Hicks 76.5.

The St Mellion International Ladies' Section February medal competition could not be played as the 10th hole was out of play due to refurbishment.
