Women in Liskeard are being encouraged to put on a traditional ’gook’ to mark the arrival of the Man Engine in the town on July 26.

Volunteers are busy sewing the cotton garments which were worn by women and girls working at mines in the Caradon area and elsewhere in Cornwall.

Anyone wishing to obtain a gook should place an order at Oxfam in the town, or at the Tourist Information Centre, by Friday, July 22.

Donations are being requested in return for the gooks.

Those wishing to make their own can purchase the pattern.

Donations of clean white sheets for making the garments would be welcomed.

Men are also being encouraged to wear period costume.
