A former English teacher was surrounded by family and friends as she celebrated her 100th birthday.

Peggy Tetley, originally of Lewisham, began her teaching career in Essex before the outbreak of the Second World War.

Peggy survived some terrifying experiences during the Blitz but, sadly, her first husband John was killed near Celle in Germany.

Peggy moved to Cornwall in the 1960s and taught at Torpoint Comprehensive (now Torpoint Community College). She lived in Millbrook with her second husband George, and they had six children.

The centenarian is to present a trophy to the college, the Peggy Tetley Award for Creative Writing, which will be given to students who excel in the subject.
