A Saltash PE teacher attempting to break two world records is entering the final stages of his epic journey across Australia – and is urging supporters back home to help give his fundraising campaign one final boost.

Bob Brown, 57, has less than 1,000 kilometres remaining on his remarkable coast-to-coast kick scooter challenge and is hoping to reach Sydney later this month.

The Bishop Cornish Church of England Primary School teacher set off from Perth on July 16 in a bid to become the fastest person to cross Australia on a non-electric kick scooter. He is also aiming to become the first person to complete the coast-to-coast journey using three different self-powered methods.

After 20 days on the road, Bob has covered around 2,420km and is averaging an incredible 140km a day as he heads towards New South Wales.

Providing an update from Australia, he said: “Less than 1,000km to go. Nearly in NSW. Averaging 140km a day. Feet strong if a bit skinny. Weather is about to turn to rain and wind. Hoping to finish in nine days’ time.

Bob admitted the gruelling challenge has taken its toll, joking that it would almost certainly be his last crossing of Australia under his own steam.

“Sore, but feel strong,” he said. “Definitely the last time across Australia by my own means, though the rail journey does sound appealing and less arduous!”

Bob is hoping people across Saltash, Cornwall and the UK will get behind his efforts by supporting his Crowdfunder, which is raising money for charity.

Bob’s challenge has not been without drama. On day five he was knocked off his scooter by a passing motorist but escaped without injuries. Now, with the finish drawing ever closer, he is determined to complete his record bid and hopes supporters back home will help him finish on a fundraising high.
