FAMILIES feeling the pinch will get some extra support this Christmas thanks to an agreement between Callington’s Cornwall Councillor and the Town Council.

Sixty families of young people at the Primary School and Community College are set to receive festive hampers, and Callington’s representative on Cornwall Council, Andrew Long, has joined with the Town Council to provide 60 gift cards to go inside the boxes.

“This follows on from the incredible campaign by Marcus Rashford regarding those who are in real need and the government U-turn on providing food for the holidays,” said Cllr Long, who represents Mebyon Kernow.

“I am so pleased to see the councils and schools working together to help as much as we can to provide extra support to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.” His comments were echoed by portreeve Suzan Tolman.

“As we begin the process of recovery from the pandemic, many families will be really struggling to feed their children over Christmas so I am pleased that we at the Town Council can support the schools in their efforts,” she said.

“It is another great example of how our community comes together when times are tough.”

Primary School headteacher Matthew Shirley said there are a number of families in the Callington area in real need.

“We cannot thank Cllr Long and the Town Council enough for their support on this vital project.

“The hampers we are preparing will provide some much- needed help over the Christmas period.”
