NATIONAL Highways has announced a series of extensive six-month roadworks set to get underway along the A30.

The organisation has revealed that it undertaking the works in an effort to improve the safety at junctions between Kennards House and Five Lanes.

A spokesperson from the organisation said: “Safety is and always will be our number one priority. That's why our ambition remains that no-one should be harmed while travelling or working on our roads. The A30 between Kennards House and Five Lanes suffers from a significant level of collisions, particularly at junctions.

“We've carried out surveys and investigations to help identify opportunities to improve road safety along this route. This is part of our ongoing commitment to reduce the number of people harmed on our roads.

“This work will help reduce incidents by diverting traffic to more suitable junctions and providing improvements on local roads.”

Works have been penned to start on September 5 and run until March 2027 - should work be completed within the planned schedule.

As part of the work, drivers are being warned that delays are expected, with full carriageway, lane, and junction closures planned throughout the works.

Alongside a number of overnight closures, the biggest hit for drivers is that from September 7, only one lane will remain open in each direction, with a 50mph speed limit for the duration of the scheme.

The organisation responsible for England’s roads says that work is focussed on six junctions – Plusha, Trevell, Two Bridges, Blackhill Quarry, Polyphant and the Highways maintenance depot – with the aim of improving road safety, reducing incidents and diverting traffic flows to more suitable junctions, while providing mitigation on local roads.

Following a number of serious and fatal collisions at the region’s infamous Plusha junction, National Highways installed an interim barrier scheme last year, which has already prevented right turns across the dual carriageway, though it says that these additional junction improvements and local authority road adjustments, which come as part of a £9.8-million scheme, including £8-million of designated safety measures, are aiming to further reduce the number of incidents in the location.

A spokesperson from National Highways said: “The safety initiative will restrict a number of further right turns, with more graded junctions and clearer visibility a key part of the scheme, and in tandem with Cornwall Council, work will also be carried out improvements to connecting roads.

“The safety project is scheduled to be completed in the spring, and the installation of traffic management will require full overnight closures (9pm-6am) of the A30 between Kennards House and Five Lanes, from September 5 to September 10.”
