Liskeard School and Community College marked the European Day of Languages, an event celebrated across the continent, by including a foreign language element in their lessons. Languages ranged from Italian, French, German. and Russian, to Chinese and Japanese. Maths teacher Ken Gluyas taught geometry in French to Year 7, and practiced mental arithmetic in Italian. Lower school science students were treated to French chocolates and croissants, while sixth form students learned about 'Bremstrahlung' (X-rays) Sixth formers were also treated to psychology in Japanese and biology in Latin. Some English students explored poetry in Caribbean patois, then tried the dialect for themselves. Mrs. Diane Matthews won the pupil's vote for the member of staff they felt had made the most successful effort to include foreign languages on the day. The pupils had a great deal of fun as well as learning the vital importance of foreign languages in today's world.
