NIGEL Libby, the father of six-year-old Ellie Libby, who was the inspiration for the charity Ellie's Haven, gave an emotional address at a service in celebration of his daughter's life on Wednesday.
A packed Riverside United Church at West Looe, listened as Mr Libby paid tribute to his little daughter who had been born with a rare genetic illness.
Speaking on behalf of Ellie's mum Julie and the family, he said they were immensely proud not only of Ellie, but of the local community, and couldn't begin to thank them enough for their support during her life and after her death. 'The support we have received from far and wide has been overwhelming,' he said.
Mr Libby has spoken of how extremely difficult he knew speaking at the service would be, but felt that he had to do it.
'I visited Ellie at the Chapel of Rest on Tuesday on my own, and sat with her for a while. I feel she gave me the strength to do it,' he said.
The service was conducted by Methodist minister the Rev Ruth Goodland and there was one hymn – All Things Bright And Beautiful.
A poem was read by Sandi Houghton, Ellie's godmother, and a tribute was given by Nicky Houghton, children's continuing care commissioning manager at the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Primary Care Trust.
A special tribute in the order of service was written by Jo Christensen, a family friend. Among those attending were representatives of Ellie's Haven charity from all over Cornwall, and also the mayor, cllr David Bryan, and councillors.
Cornwall councillor Armand Toms said afterwards: 'It was a very sad occasion for the town, the large attendance showing the respect and high regard for Ellie and the Libby family. Nigel's tribute brought many to tears.'
Ellie died on January 5 and her ashes are to be laid to rest, next to her 14-month-old brother Thomas, in West Looe cemetery.
Mr Libby said Ellie's Haven – the charity to provide a holiday retreat for sick children and their families – will continue.
'We are currently working on proposals to try to move the charity forward,' he said.
'Hopefully they will come to fruition in the near future and we will be able to make an announcement.'
