PUPILS at Gunnislake Primary Academy had an inspiring day with archaeologists as part of a Heritage Lottery-funded project, Understanding Landscapes.

Three archaeologists visited the school to give the children an insight into what their job entails, and to kick start the project, linking it to the Calstock area.

Activities included learning about the Iron Age.

Children made round houses using sticks and playdough before removing the sticks, and covering their structures in sand to represent soil before excavating each other’s sites to find the marks left by the structures.

‘The children were really engaged in the activities and learnt a lot about the work of archaeologists and what it was like to live in the Iron Age,’ said headteacher Claire Matin.

‘They loved excavating the sites and were so excited when they discovered the post holes.’

Arthur, from Year 2, said: ‘I want to be an archaeologist when I grow up!’
