YOUNG people who have volunteered more than 320 hours to their local community in the fields of the arts, sports and charitable work were presented with Duke of Edinburgh awards.

The 14 youngsters, who are all part of the Saltash Open Awards Centre, received their certificates from Cornwall Councillor and former mayor Hilary Frank during a ceremony at the town’s Guildhall.

A well as giving their time to things like helping younger children read or learn a sport, the group have hiked a cumulative total of more than 1400km over the past year on expeditions in Devon and Cornwall.

Participants in the Bronze and Silver awards programmes have learned new skills in art, cookery and drama in addition to developing and pursuing interests of their own choice.

Receiving Bronze awards were: Faith Cann: charity shop work, gym, cooking; Heather Hart: charity shop work, dance, painting; Finn Hilsdon: charity shop work, rugby, instrument; Alex Maciver-Redwood: coaching, rugby, instrument; Cameron McFarlane: rugby coaching, cooking: Eva Pascoe: music teaching, skiing, instrument; Max Robins: animal care, rugby, sailing.

Receiving Silver awards were: Lucy Allan: charity shop work, dancing, baking; Alice Barrow: primary school reading group, sailing, fine art; Amelia Horne: Rainbows, gym, cooking; Rebecca Horne: primary school support, gym, cooking; Ellen Proctor: Rainbows, football, cooking; Edward Rule: charity shop work, gym, sewing; Tommy Williams: school group, dance, instrument.
