Cricket- County Division Three
Werrington v Menheniot
Menheniot made the trip to Werrington on Saturday on another superb summer's day and upon winning the toss had no hesitation in electing to bat.
Captain Phil Adsett and young Alex Tunnadine got the visitiors off to an ideal start bu putting on 88 for the first wicket in 27 overs on a tack that always did a bit. At this point, Tunnadine was bowled by Ollie Bailey for a well-crafted 31, an innings that showed the short of profress that he is making as he once again looked in total control before perishing in an effort to move the score along. Stuart Taylor replaced him and having scored a quick-fire 11, he was stumped by a considerable margin of Cobbledick which led to the introduction of Ed Gard to try and continue the acceleration.
This he did with some typical lusty blows that saw the ball disapper into adjoining acreage as he scored a rapid 34 before being caught off once again off the bowling of cobbledick, during this period, Adsett who had again looked as solid as a rock at the top of the order was run out for a classy 43, not quite making the 30 yard line as the balls were removed. With overs runnings out, John Massey and Melvin Rigler came and went in an effort to push the final total over the 200 Mark, Andy Taylor and the two strands tried to achieve this, but at the end of their alloted overs, Menheniot fell two runs short, finishing on 198-7.
The visitors were not quite sure how good a score 198 was on this wicket, but were encouraged to believe that it was defendable when Gard bowled Robbie smeeth for one in the third over. This led to Moore joining dingle at the crease and these two scored at an alarming rate, although it has to be said that many of the runs were coming from less than convincing shots behind square on the offside from gards, bowling. Gard persisted to eventually pin Dingle LBW and with Adsett bowling his usual line and length at the other end, wickets began to tumble.
At the 24 over mark, Werrington were well placed in terms of runs scored, but they had lost 6 wickets to the persistance of the two oening bowlers, Gard was replaced by Stuart Taylor, fresh from an U-15 Cornwall tour to the South Coast and it was he who wrapped uup the home sides innings as first he trapped the dangerous Ollie Bailey plunb LBW and then clean bowled Moore and Jenkin to leave the home side bowled out for 119.
Gard once again bowled his socks off to take 3 wickets in a spell that could have produced 10! Adsett continued his rich vain of form to take 4 and Taylor once again proved that when he gets it right, he can cause all sorts of problems to any side.
This was a pleasing victory foor Menheniot against another side thhat they have struggled to bebat in the recent past. The fact that it was achieved with a so called 'weakened' side makes it even better and onnce again.
Shows that given the right attitude, eleven willing souls are sometimes worth twice as many pressed men.
