Cricket- County Division Three
St. Austell II v Fowey
On another overcast afternoon, St Austell batted first with Craig Richards and Steve Jarman making a steady start against the lively Fowey teenage opening attack of Jo Leach and Leon Farrow.
With 47 on the board, Richards (20) was brilliantly run out by the speedy Nick Isbell in the covers. Steve Jarman was soon to follow to the pavilion as a result of another excellent piece of work by the same fielder, diving to his right to knock up a forcefully driven cover drive and then taking the ball in true Jonty Rhodes style.
Ian Collings and Simon Rattenbury then put on a hard hitting and quick scoring third wicket partnership of 124 before the latter was dismissed for 68, going for another big hit. With a break for rain and early tea taken, St. Austell returned to finish off their innings with Ian Collings, who had played well on not the easiest of wickets and taken advantage of a few dropped chances, going on to reach his ton off the last ball. The four main Fowey bowlers bowled well during their opening spells with Jo Leach in particular generating good pace and being unlucky not to pick up a couple of wickets.
With a target of 251 set, Tony Whyatt and Robbie Bennetts got Fowey off to a perfect start and proceeded to put on a century partnership before Bennetts was dismissed for 57.
This was a welcome return to form for the Fowey opener who has struggled to date this season to play the type of innings we saw today. His concentrated knock included five 4s and two 6s and hopefully will lead to more of the same in the weeks ahead. Tony Whyatt, who enjoyed a good weekend with the bat, was unfortunately next to go having scored eight 4s in his well played innings of 51. This left the incoming batsmen having to maintain and up the run rate without being able to play themselves in and this led to the loss of further quick wickets. Andrew Bennetts with 27 before being run out and Mick Meares (22) were the only other batsmen to get into double figures as the tail quickly collapsed five runs short of what would have been much needed maximum batting points.
