Menheniot v Foxhole

On a day which which was more akin to water sports after torrential rain had covered South East Cornwall for most of the morning, Menheniot entertained their China Clay opponents, Foxhole. Thanks must go to Keith Goldsmith, who had the foresight to purchase tarpaulin covers for the wicket, and it remained dry underneath.

Play began slightly late with the visitors opening the batting against Menheniot's attack of Stuart Taylor and Alex Tunnadine, both still just 14 years-old. Unfortunately, they came against an old stager in Bernie Maycock who took them apart, scoring to boundaries in one over. Even the introduction of big-hearted Mike Harrison failed to stem the runs and after 10 overs, Foxhole had score 58. It was only when veteran Keith Goldsmith came into bowl that wickets began to fall and the scoring rate slowed down. Maycock was dismissed for 63, including 11 fours and a six. There were 28 extra runs scored before Foxhole were bowled out for 155. Tunnadine was the pick of Menheniot's bowlers, taking 3-14 off 11 overs closely followed by Goldsmith, 3-29 from nine overs. Young Andrew keeble bowled at the end to record 2-5.

Bill McLoughlin and Tunnadine opened Menheniot's innings, reaching 64 off 12 overs before the latter gloved a catch departing for a quickfire 32 from 11 scoring shots. McLoughlin followed in next over, being called lbw. This brought together the evergreen Alan Sedgley and his youthful student Jim Harrison. Together, they put on 90 for the third wicket in 19 overs to record an eight wicket victory and 20 points. It was interesting to note that the third wicket partnership of 90 only included four boundaries, the rest of the runs coming from singles and twos with a couple of threes thrown in. Sedgley was 41 not out with Harrison just behind on 39 not out. The rumour squad reported back that a certain cricketer from Quethiock requested the use of a zimmer frame for Sunday's service.

Scores - Foxhole 155 (Maycock 63, Tunnadine 3-14, Goldsmith 3-29, Keeble 2-5). Menheniot 156-2 (McLoughlin 22, Tunnadine 32, A Sedgley 41 n.o., J Harrison 39 n.o.).

Menheniot (20 pts) beat Foxhole (four) by eight wickets.
