Cricket- County Division Six (East)

Foxhole v St Neot

Travelling to Foxhole, deep in China Clay Country, the Taverners were charting new territories as none of the team had ever played here before. After a few minor detours, all arrived safely including, somewhat surprisingly, the accident prone Clapham.

The toss was made and the St Neot captain Andrew kent elected to bat. He opened with A Tamblyn and they soon began to rip into the bowling although Tamblyn appeared blinded at times, not by Kent's batting but by the reflection of car windscreens.

These two put on a staggering 18 (a record for these two together) before Kent fell to the best ball of the day from Holland. pearce was next and upped the momentum before he went slogging round a straight one with the score on 60 after 13 overs. Tamblyn soon followed skying a top edge and it was left to Clapham and Taylor to steady the ship. They kept the board ticking over as Clapham drove with an ability yet to be seen on the road and Taylor picked off loose deliveries with ease. Once Clapham had been caught behind, a mini collapse ensued before Taylor and G Kent rallied the innings. On 146 for 7, in came M Bunt, he promptly dispatched his first ball of the season for six and soon took the score past 200 and his personal score past 50. The innings finished on the last ball as Watts was caught and the Taverners had scored 235.

Chasing 236 to win, Foxhole began steadily against the opening attack of Bunt and rowe as Brannwind and Maycock chipped and chased the way to 23 before a catch was finally held and Bunt had his first victim. Watts then replaced Rowe and had an immediate effect as he took a diving caught and bowled to remove Giles. The next over Maycock was bowled by Bunt and Foxhole were 34 for three. Resistance was met from Jago but once Taylor had replaced Bunt wickets started to fall at regular intervals. Catches from G Kent and Tamblyn mixed in a couple of straight ones helped Taylor along the way. Amongst this AK and Rowe also combined for a dynamic run our and Searle demonstrated his bruising fielding style, before Taylor scooped up his second five wicket haul in two games to finish the Foxhole resistance and they were all out for 134. A second league fixture and a second win for St Neot although the overall impression left was that of some catching practise needed as numerous chances, of varying difficulties were put to ground. Perhaps this could be put down to the splendid spread laid on at the tea interval- we will see!!
