A couple have apologised to neighbours after gangs of youths gatecrashed their teenage daughter's party and left the streets 'looking like Beirut'.

Martin and Annette Herdman were on holiday in Spain when their 16-year-old daughter Holly hosted a party at the family home in Lostwithiel.

It is understood that the party quickly got out of hand as hordes of revellers gatecrashed the house and started drinking and fighting in the streets.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall police said they had a number of emergency calls reporting groups of teenagers drinking and fighting with sticks.

The spokesman said: 'We had reports of groups of 15- and 16-year-olds fighting with batons and sticks in the street after a house party.

'They had been drinking and there was glass on the floor.

'When the police arrived the groups had already dispersed.'

The party caused such disruption that Mr and Mrs Herdman, who are local antiques dealers, sent their daughter out to apologise to neighbours and felt the need to publicly apologise themselves.

Mrs Herdman, said: 'I want to take this opportunity to apologise for any upset caused.

'We were really shocked to hear what happened and are so sorry to everyone on the street affected by this.

'We are deeply sorry.'
