A YOUNG member of Callington Town Band has won a place in the Cornwall Youth Brass Band. Fourteen-year-old Yasmin Stevens attended a Youth Brass Band concert in which her brother was playing percussion and it was suggested that she should apply for the band. Following support from musical director of the town band, Paul Boase, Yasmin was accepted and started rehearsing her flugel horn with them in the Autumn. She made her first appearance with them in Truro at Christmas, which she managed to fit in with a busy schedule of rehearsals and performances for both the town band and Liskeard Silver Band. Yasmin comes from a very musical family, with both her brother Karl and her father Peter members of the silver and town band. Her grandfather Don Howlett, who started teaching Yasmin to play at the age of ten, is a former musical director of the Lostwithiel Youth Band and he led them to the South West Junior Champions title.
