A family who have created a sustainable, multi-faced business at a derelict farm has won this year’s Duke of Cornwall Award for the best farm diversification business in the county.

Ian, Fiona, Meryvn and Amy Flindall from Chypraze Farm will collect the award at a special presentation during the first day of the 2018 Royal Cornwall Show, which runs from June 7 to 9.

Chypraze Farm is nestled above Portheras Cove at Morvah near Pendeen and has been home to the family since the 1930s.

The 140-acre holding, 70 of which is useable agricultural land, was no longer a viable proposition when the family took over. The farm buildings were in a poor state of repair without stock or machinery.

The family set about making the farm pay and established a herd of Saddleback pigs and Hereford cattle. Value was added to their core farming business through selling their own meat direct to the public.

Butchery facilities were added on-site which enables the family to process and pack their own meat in-house as well.

A stewardship agreement with Natural England to encourage light grazing on the cliffs and to enhance the habitat for choughs provided some additional income.

Next came the renovation of a tumbledown granite dairy barn on the farm to create The Cornish Wedding Barn. The farm’s stunning coastal location has enabled the wedding venue to double revenue.
