By-pass
signs stolen
CAMPAIGNERS for the Dobwalls by pass are angry that one of their two specially made signs (Dobwalls By Pass Build It Now), has been stolen within two days of it being put up.
The signs, at a cost of £110 each, funded by villagers, were placed at the two approaches to Dobwalls as a constant reminder that although the Government has set aside the funding for the bypass - £17million - there is as yet no timetable for the work to begin.
The signs were put up on Friday evening, and the missing one, at the Theme Park junction, was still in place at 7.30pm on Sunday morning, but less than two hours later it had disappeared.
Long time campaigner, county councillor George Hocking, described the theft as deliberate and disgraceful. 'Old age pensioners have put their hands in their pockets and given us £5's at a time to get these signs made' he said.
Mr Hocking said that with the extra traffic generated by the Eden Project the bypass was now needed more than ever. Campaigner Viv Giles who has kept records of traffic travelling through the village for many years said numbers were up by a third this year.
Mr Hocking is asking whoever is associated with the theft to leave the sign somewhere where it can be collected. They can call him on 01503 262779, and are assured no further action will be taken.

First to switch
to natural gas
RESTORMEL borough council has become the first authority in the South West to switch to liquefied natural gas (LNG) for some of its vehicle fleet.
As a result the first ever delivery of natural gas to the Westcountry took place yesterday (Thursday) - to a depot in St Austell to allow the new vehicles to start work immediately. Four out of the five brand new refuse vehicles have already been delivered, and four 32 tonne skip type disposal vehicles are expected at the beginning of September.
The Energy Saving Trust has given Restormel a grant of over £100,000 towards acquiring their new fleet.
