TV star helps raise funds

The man with the gavel at a special auction to take place within the next few weeks at Killigarth Manor will be none other than television star Richard Madeley. And the top lot will be for a make over by top hair stylist Nicky Clarke, live on air on ITV's This Morning, presented by Richard and his wife Judy Finnigan.

He has volunteered his services to help raise funds for the Harbour Lights Trust, a fund set up in memory of Polperro's Daniel Kebble which donates money for the purchase of safety equipment for fishermen.

The Madeley family, who have a home at Talland, near Polperro where they have happily settled into the community, have been most supportive to the Kebbles since Daniel lost his life in January while fishing.

From Cornish Times to Cosmopolitan

Former Cornish Times junior reporter Lorraine Butler, whose parents Tony and Vivien Butler live in Pensilva, has been appointed editor of Cosmopolitan Magazine in London.

Lorraine, 32, joined the Cornish Times on day release from Liskeard School when she was 16, then worked as a junior. The paper was unable to offer her apprenticeship because there wasn't a vacancy so she left and joined the Wimbledon News at the age of 17. She then worked for the Sun, both Daily and Sunday Mirror, the Times, Today, Marie Claire and B magazine and finally back to the Times as Features Editor.

Her appointment to the prestigious Cosmopolitan begins in three months and it's certainly going to be a special year for her, she's getting married in October.

Clean flag for Readymoney

Readymoney beach at Fowey has been awarded a prestigious Seaside Award by the Tidy Britain Group, which means that it meets strict European guidelines on water quality - and tough checks on beach management. The beach, which will have to display updated water quality results for the 2000 season, will now be able to fly a distinctive blue and yellow flag to denote that it offers a tidy, clean beach. It is one of 47 regional beaches to receive the award - one other locally being Par.

Family reassurance via the web

Information on Caradon council's website, and prompt action by receptionist Donna Buckley, helped reassure an American resident who was worried about his parents in South East Cornwall.

Unable to contact his parents by phone he found Caradon's number on the council's website. Donna took his call and arranged for police to visit the couple. They were fine, but an undetected fault had put their phone out of action.
